EUR/USD = 0.4 pip spread
$5 commission = 0.5 pip per side
Effective spread = 1.4 pips (.4 + .5 + .5)
Competition spreads typically 2-3 pips

USD/JPY spread example

USD/JPY = 0.4 pip spread
$5 commission = approximately 0.5 pips per side
